2-2-2 for Century’s Burton in second SuperCup weekend

It was another exciting weekend for Century Motorsport as 17-year-old Gus Burton came away with a 2-2-2 in the weekend’s three races, after qualifying in P3 on the 2.43mile GP layout of Brands Hatch circuit.

Having done no testing on the Brands GP circuit with Burton, the team were unsure as to how the weekend would pan out. Never failing to impress though, Burton managed to post the third quickest time of 1m30.219s in Saturday’s qualifying session, before claiming three out of a possible three podiums for the second weekend running.

Getting off to a great start in his first race of the weekend, Burton stormed into second place off the line and then did an incredible job to keep the more experienced Will Burns off his back for the entire race. Race 2 was very similar, with the same 3 front-runners and the same battle for second place, with no chance of being able to attack the leader. There was no movement to the top three, with Burton crossing the finish line in P2.

In the third and final race of the weekend, there was a reverse grid of the top four from race 2, putting Burton in a P3 start position. Within seconds of the race start, an incident further back on the grid forced a 4-lap long safety car period. Once racing got back underway, Burton made it his mission to claim P2 from Burns and he was successful in doing so, right before a red flag was waved for a second incident further back in the pack, which ended the race early.

The triple podium finish was enough to put Burton in the championship lead however a post-race penalty was handed to Burton, leaving him just a few points behind the leader.

Burton has plenty more chances to reclaim the championship lead, starting with the next round of SuperCup, which is in two weekends time at Oulton Park (22nd – 23rd August).
